Infections

Iron overload is suggested to be a risk factor predisposing to infections, since all groups of protozoa, fungi, gram positive and negative bacteria require iron for survival and replication.16

Laboratory and non-laboratory tests

To detect the severity of iron overload is necessary to monitor some parameters in patients with thalassaemia and sickle cell disease on treatment with iron chelators. They may also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.17
